Meili lived in a small village nestled between misty mountains and a rushing river. While other children played in the fields, Meili could always be found with a piece of charcoal, sketching the world around her on flat stones or in the dirt. Her dream was to become a great painter, but her family was too poor to buy even a single brush.

One evening, as the moon rose pale and full, an old man with a beard as white as snow appeared at her door. He handed her a wooden brush with bristles that shimmered like starlight.

"This is a Gift of Creation, Meili. Use it only to help those in need, for a selfish heart will turn the ink to dust," the old man cautioned before vanishing into the night.

Confused but curious, Meili painted a small bird on the wall of her hut. To her amazement, the bird chirped, shook its ink-black feathers, and flew out the window! She had been given the Magic Paintbrush.

"Meili! The village well has run dry! The crops are dying," her neighbor, Wei, cried out the next morning.

Meili rushed to the center of the village. She painted a great, swirling river on the parched ground. Seconds later, a roar of water erupted, filling the well and soaking the thirsty fields. The villagers cheered, calling her their savior.

"I'll paint food for the hungry and clothes for the cold! No one in our village will suffer again," Meili declared, her heart full of joy.

But news of the magic brush reached the greedy Lord Gwan. He ordered his soldiers to bring Meili to his palace, a cold and hollow place built of stone and gold.

"Paint me a mountain of solid gold, girl! If you refuse, you'll never see your village again," the Lord demanded, his eyes gleaming with avarice.

Meili remembered the old man's warning. She knew she had to be clever. instead of gold, she painted a vast, stormy ocean with a small island in the distance. On the island, she painted a single gold tree.

"The gold is there, Lord Gwan. But how will you reach it?" she asked calmly.

"Paint me a ship, you fool! A giant ship with silk sails!" he roared.

Meili painted the ship, and the Lord jumped aboard. As the ship sailed toward the island, Meili painted a great gale. The wind caught the sails, blowing the ship further and further away into the horizon, until Lord Gwan and his greed were nothing more than a speck in the distance.

Meili returned to her village, where she continued to use her brush to bring color and life to those who needed it most, always remembering that the true magic was in the kindness of her heart.
