Rain hammered against the windows as Max settled down with a book. Suddenly, a soft mewing came from the front door. He opened it to find a scruffy orange cat, soaking wet and shivering.
"Oh, you poor thing! You're freezing! Come inside quickly," Max exclaimed, ushering the cat into the hallway.
He dried the cat with a warm towel and offered it a bowl of milk and some leftover chicken. The cat ate with sudden urgency.
"Thank you, young man. That was quite a necessary intervention," a sophisticated voice said from the floor.
Max jumped, nearly dropping his book. "Who... who said that? Is there someone else here?"
"I did," the cat replied, calmly licking a stray drop of milk from its orange fur. "I am Winston. It's truly a pleasure to meet someone with a soul as kind as this chicken is delicious."
"But you're a cat! Cats don't talk! They meow and sleep all day!" Max stammered, his eyes wide.
"Observation noted. However, I wasn't always a cat. I was once Prince Winston of Eldoria," the cat explained, sitting primly.
"Eldoria? Is that near here? And how did you... well, shrink?" Max asked, sitting on the bottom step.
"A jealous wizard named Malvolio cursed me because I refused to help him steal a dragon's egg," Winston sighed. "The spell only breaks when someone shows me genuine kindness without expecting anything in return."
"Wait... so because I gave you chicken, the spell is broken?" Max wondered aloud.
"Indeed. Your heart was pure. Now, watch closely," Winston whispered.
A golden light filled the room. The cat grew taller, its orange fur turning into a magnificent silk robe. Standing before Max was a young man with a crown of gold.
"Max, you have saved a prince today. Will you come visit my kingdom one day?" Winston asked, offering a handshake.
"Only if you have more talking animals there!" Max laughed.
Winston joined in the laughter, and though he returned to Eldoria, the two remained best friends across worlds.
