The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the floorboards as Emma climbed the creaky stairs to her grandmother's attic. Dust particles danced in the golden light streaming through the small circular window.

"Be careful on those top steps, Emma!" her grandmother called from the kitchen below. "The wood is quite old!"

"I'm fine, Grandma! It's just a bit dusty up here," Emma replied, pushing aside a stack of old magazines.

She had volunteered to help clean out the attic, but soon she found herself distracted by a heavy gilded frame. As she moved it, something metallic clinked against the floor. She picked up an old brass key with intricate scrollwork.

"Grandma! Look at this!" Emma shouted, holding the key up. "I found a strange key behind the old painting!"

Her grandmother climbed up, wiping her hands on her apron. She took the key, her breath hitching.

"Oh my... I haven't seen this in forty years," she whispered. "This belongs to the music box your great-grandfather gave me. I thought it was lost when the attic was reorganized decades ago."

"A music box? Where is it now? Do you remember?" Emma asked, her eyes lighting up.

"It should be near the circular window, tucked behind those heavy velvet curtains," Grandma suggested.

They searched until Emma spotted a box covered in faded blue velvet. She lifted it carefully.

"Is this the one, Grandma? It's made of such dark, beautiful mahogany," Emma noted.

"Yes, that's it. Try the key, dear," Grandma urged.

Emma inserted the key. With a satisfying click, the lid opened. A delicate waltz filled the air. Inside were sepia photographs and bundles of letters.

"Look at these photos! Is this you and Great-grandfather standing by a peach tree?" Emma asked.

"Yes," Grandma smiled. "He wrote me every week when he was working in the city. These letters tell the story of how our family began."

"Can we read them together?" Emma asked softly, sitting on the dusty floor.

"Of course, sweetheart. Every story deserves to be heard," Grandma replied.

They spent the rest of the afternoon in the attic, the music box playing its soft tune, connecting their lives through the simple power of a lost key.
